High speed steel is generally used to manufacture various cutting tools: machine bits, taps, milling cutters and machine cutters. It's also used to fabricate drill bits and power saw blades and use in punches and dies is increasing. Because it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper, high speed steels are capable of cutting metals at higher speeds than high carbon steel.
One of the most common types of high speed steel contains 18% tungsten, 4% chromium, 1% vanadium, and between 0.5 and 0.8% carbon. A common feature of "18-4-l" high speed steels is their high hardening temperature, (around 1260-1280°C). Therefore, any danger of overheating high speed steel using a hardening temperature of 1280°C is unlikely.
Or in simpler terms . . . Even though high speed steel is about as hard as high carbon steel at room temperature, but at elevated temperatures it becomes more durable.
To increase their service life, tools manufactured using high speed steels are sometimes coated. One of the most popular coatings is titanium nitride (TiN). Most such coatings work to increase a tool's lubricity or hardness. A coating can allow the edge of a tool to pass cleanly through its target material without the risk of galling. Such coatings also help decrease cutting temperatures and increase the overall service life of coated high speed steel tools.
